2012 Winter Members Juried Show - Part 2

I participate in the juried shows because it allows me an opportunity to further my creative development in a variety of medium. I work in oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, & mixed media. I painted 2 oils for Part 1 in January & 2 acrylics for Part 2 in February.

At NAA, there is an opportunity to have a private show, if the artist has been in 2 juried shows. NAA's Hills Gallery is a small gallery space on the 1st floor with it's own private entrance. The artist (or up to three artists) must pay an exhibit fee in addition to all other costs for publicity, show cards, food & beverage for the Opening Reception. It's a great opportunity to show your work in a professional gallery setting if you have a following or if you want to get your name out there.

Part 2 will run Feb 3 - 26 with an Opening Reception Sat, Feb 4, 7 - 9pm. Media: acrylic, pastel, mixed media, fine craft, photography. Look for my paintings in the show, "Morning Light" to the left (acrylic, 9" x 12") & "Snow Falling on Pines" to the left (acrylic, 9" x 12").

Spend as much time as you like at NAA, there is never any sales pressure. Check-out the new gift shop on the 2nd floor also... If you're in town for a few hours, within walking distance of NAA, the State Street area contains many cool shops, galleries, concert halls & eateries... Waterfront Park is just down the street from NAA. There are outdoor concerts & festivities year round.

Autumn Shows

Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk, Maine holds its latest art auction - A fundraiser to benefit Goat Island Lighthouse in Cape Porpoise, ME and Kennebunkport Historical Society. The lighthouse has been under re-construction since the blizzard of 1978... Yes, you heard it correctly.. 1978! The covered walkway from the house to the lighthouse was destroyed during a storm at that time and is finally being rebuilt. Oh, and if you're wondering why the lighthouse keeper needs a covered walkway, clearly you don't know Maine winters.
I hopped a boat-ride over to the lighthouse on Saturday Sept 17 with the friendly lighthouse keeper and several other artists. I quickly realized I was sorely lacking in things to make the experience easy, like an easel... or a tree to lean on. The view I wanted involved ankle-twisting climbs across not-so-friendly boulders, a task which I quickly abandoned after a brief attempt. So, I applaud those who were able to find their special place on the island. My painting is of the lighthouse keeper's abode, not the actual lighthouse. C'est la vie... Oh, by the way, my ankles are still sore...

Newburyport Art Association holds it's Fall Juried Show on Saturday Sept 24 from 7 - 9 pm. The Juror: Jane Young of Chase Young Gallery in Boston, MA.
Part 1 of the Fall Show involves oil, acrylic, sculpture, fine craft, printmaking. Show dates: Sept 23 to Oct 13. I received word yesterday, Sept 21, my paintings, "View at Otter Cove" (acrylic) and "Ogunquit Beach" (oil) were both accepted into the show... which is always nice.
Part 2 of the Fall Show involves watercolor, pastel, photography, mixed media, digital art. Show dates:Oct 23 to Nov 12. I'll be working on a watercolor & a pastel in the next few weeks for submission into Part 2 of the Juried Show...

Heartwood College of Art & The Brick Store Museum of Kennebunk held a highly successful fundraising art auction on Sept 2 & 3. The show featured "Scenes of the 'Bunk" - Kennebunk, that is. Selected artists painted scenes of a particular location and of a specific size (10"x10" or 12"x8") to sell unframed for no more than $200 each.

August Already? Amazing. It's been a relaxing summer in southern Maine. Not too hot either.

Soon, my daughter will leave the nest and embark on her college journey and it will be a strange, but wonderful change for her. Looking back to my own experience so long ago, I recall the moment of separation, which I didn't handle too well simply because I was totally unfamiliar with the shockingly intense feelings of sadness in saying "Goodbye" to my parents. I must say, I'm not looking forward to that, nor do I want my daughter to experience it. But I do remember that the intensity is shortlived and there is some consolation in the fact that we will only be a few hours car-ride away. Both of my brothers chose colleges far-far away and wound up staying. One lives in Minneapolis with his family and the other lives in Seattle. The folks live in PA. But at least, we all live in the USA. That's huge... and I'm grateful. So, we'll all make it through and come out on the other side with smiles on our faces...

Speaking of experiences a long time ago, I took shop class in high school - one of 2 women I might add - and I built several items. A "lazy Susan" for a dining table, a coffee table and a bureau. The "lazy Susan" was actually stolen as it was drying in the finishing room, the coffee table was used for 10 years until it was sold in a yard sale and the bureau was used for over 25 years and is currently in my downstairs studio. I haven't made any furniture since but I do have a deep appreciation for fine-quality, handmade furniture and woodwork. Which leads me to my latest event...

In September, four of my paintings will be part of the "Women Artists in Maine" Exhibit at the Thos Moser Flagship Showroom in Freeport, Maine. I am honored to be included in this group of "Maine's finest women artists", including Jill Hoy, Anne Ireland & Vanessa Nesvig , just to name a few. There will be an Opening Reception on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 from 6 to 8 pm. The exhibit is open to the public and will be up until December 31.

Summer Shows

Art Guild of the Kennebunks holds their 2nd show of the summer the weekend of July 22, 23, 24. Ribbons & cash prizes will be awarded. I have 2 framed paintings & 5 unframed pieces that will be on exhibit, one of which is on the left titled, "Ogunquit River", an oil - 22x22. AGK Shows are held primarily at the Community House in Kennebunkport, Maine or at River Tree Arts in Kennebunk.

The Art Guild consists of a juried group artists who reside in the area of or near Kennebunkport. "In 1980 the Art Guild was founded to foster camaraderie, support & professional stimulation... the Guild developed into a formal corporate structure with non-profit status. AGK grants scholarships to deserving students in the visual arts to Kennebunk High School, River Tree Arts, Heartwood College of Art and The New School. From the inception, members & continue to be juried into the organization based on professional artistic criteria."

Shore Road Gallery will be exhibiting my paintings again this year. Elaine & Bernie Stein have created a lovely gallery featuring many art forms including sculpture, ironwork, jewelry, paintings & so much more... The gallery is nestled in the pines on Shore Road in Ogunquit, just up from Perkins Cove. The pastel to the left is just one of the 10 or so paintings of mine this summer at the gallery. The Hive in Kennebunk is a happenin' New Art Colony on Route One in the big yellow building near Marlow's. Open year-round, it is a gallery, a performance place, a hang-out for little people & a frame shop at the newly restored Route One section of Kennebunk. Barn Gallery in Ogunquit has their Annual Juried Show June 29 to July 30. For the past 20 years, I always give it a try... Why not, right? A beautiful gallery that features an interesting array of local & non-local artists. During the summer, the gallery also highlights 2 artists a month for a show in a smaller space off the main gallery as well as unframed work by members. Newburyport Art Association "Arts & Letters" Show June 30 to July 30. Take a poem or lyrics to song and combine it with art... It's always a fun show seeing the many interpretations of a theme. Arts & Letters Show is in the Hills Gallery on the 1st floor. Emerson's poem, "To Laugh Often & Love Much" accompanies the art...

Art Guild of the Kennebunks has it's first show of the summer on Friday, June 24, at the Community House in Kennebunkport. It was also the Annual AGK Awards Show. I have 2 paintings in the show and 5 unframed in the bin. One of my paintings, "The Sea at Ogunquit" a watercolor, received 1st Place, which is always nice! The show was Juried by Gail Sauter, Master Pastellist and member of the Copley Society. Gail's comments: "Lovely sense of depth &
use of color harmony with interesting transparent layering and opaque techniques. A peaceful scene presented with power & punch."
The weekend show ends June 26 but don't let that stop you from making the trip to Kennebunkport! Many things to see and do... Shops, restaurants, galleries, etc...

River Tree Arts currently has the Annual "Maine Scene" Juried Show on exhibit. This year's Juror is Nadine Schoepfle, former creator & manager of Art Guild of the Kennebunks of Southern Maine. I was fortunate to have my artwork chosen for the promotion of the show - "Perkins Cove" and "View at Ogunquit River" - both scenes in Ogunquit. Spring Exhibits

River Tree Arts will have their annual "Maine Scene" Juried Show with the Opening Reception June 10. I'm happy to say that River Tree Arts has chosen my painting for the publicity for the show, which is always nice. A scene of "Perkins Cove" in Ogunquit complete with the drawbridge, docks & rowboats that complete the scene. Perkins Cove was one of the first images I painted when I landed in Southern Maine after moving up from the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 23 years ago. So, please come to the show on June 10! It will be a great show!

Newburyport Art Association Annual Art Auction is scheduled for Saturday June 11, so get ready to bid! I have 2 paintings in the Auction from about 10 to 15 years ago, shown at left. One of my paintings was painted on site (partially) at Swift River in the White Mountains of New Hampshire (far left) and the other, a farmhouse/cove scene in North Berwick, Maine. Sometimes it's hard to let my older paintings go but they'd be happier hanging on someone's walls than on a shelf in my studio! There will some great deals on outstanding original artwork... Additionally, proceeds from the fund NAA operations. So... it's all good. Hope it's an awesome turnout

Newburyport Art Association underwent significant changes in December of 2010. Three major players in the organization are no longer there. They were also my friends. I mean, I had some deep conversations with these folks over the years. I don't really understand why they're gone. Well, I do, but it's like... come on. What's with that? Sometimes I just don't get it. So... it's a whole new group now. I don't know, you know? (You probably know what I'm talking about. It's one of those things that you're not supposed to talk about. I really don't like those things...)

Annnnnyway, Newburyport Art Association starts the new year with the Winter Open Members' Show featuring Acrylic, Digital Art, Drawing, Mixed Media, Oil, Pastel, Photography & Watercolor. The Opening Reception is Sunday January 16, 3-5 pm. I have 2 paintings in the show & 8 in the giftshop.

Heartwood College of Art's "In Search of Home" Exhibit is up and running. The subject is HOME as shelter, refuge, comfort, security, family, friends, traditional rituals, spirit, safety, memory & our persistent search for all of this under one roof. The Opening reception was Friday November 19. The concept behind the title, In Search of Home, brings about the question, What Is Home? Is it a house? Is it a feeling? Is it a place? Is it a person? Suddenly, the concept becomes quite complex. My entry actually evolved into 3 paintings, none of which reveals a particular structure but more the feeling of a place. Other entries were completely different than mine. One was a birds nest. One was a mother. One was and apartment building in a city, etc... The beauty of being human is that our individual responses to such a question are right-on. It is an awesome exhibit which should be checked-out! Show runs til Dec 23.

Anne's Legacy

This past weekend Berwick Academy's Upper School put on their production of "Anne Frank - Diary of a Young Girl" in South Berwick, Maine. This is the story of two Jewish families in hiding in a secret annex on the top floor of an office building in Amsterdam, Holland during World War II at the time of the holocaust. It is a remarkable & moving story and testament to the will of a young woman who brought to light an amazing story of humanity, decency & survival. Simply told, this true story is such an important document regarding the sanctity of the human spirit. If you aren't able to see the play, you should read this book.

So Long, Dear Friend

On Columbus Day, Monday October 11, we took a trip up to the Sebago Lake Area to catch the final voyage of the Songo River Queen. There was an article in the Maine Sunday Telegram last month, about this last trip. We decided make make the
effort and drive up from our home in Wells, Maine.

Times have changed, technology is King and the nostalgic days of the little ferry had come to pass. For years & years, this paddle-boat-ferry cruised up & down the winding Songo River of Maine and through the Locks, just like locks in England which are still used today.

On the voyage, there were dozens of local folk along the sides of the river waving "farewell" to us. They were all saying good-bye to a gentle friend that gave so much to the community.

I was just in Ogunquit getting a birthday gift at This Is It, a small clothing boutique on Main Street. Everybody was there, traffic jam and everything. People were buying baked goods at Bread & Roses - The Bakery in Ogunquit - and all the businesses were hopping. Everyone is happy on this beautiful, colorful day.

We went to the Deerfield Fair on Sunday, October 3, in New Hampshire... I always look forward to the fairs in October. Couldn't see the Piglet Race due to the crowd but took in the sheepdog/duck presentation, a fabulous tightrope-walking family, shown in the photo to the left. They're actually on a wire about 20 feet off the ground! I mean, if that's not entertaining, I don't know what is... And there's also prize-winning ducks, goats, chickens, horses and pigs galore. Not to mention the incredible amount of delicious food! Plus, the rides in the amusement park and the handmade items... Going to a fair or 2 has become a Fall Tradition for us, it's an event that we really look forward to every year. It was awesome!

Heartwood College of Art is having their annual "Trust In Art" fresh paint day on October 16 or some artists have chosen to paint 2 weeks earlier, which is what I have done. Specific painting locations are called for this year. All scenes are on the combined property of the Kennebunkport Land Trust. The goal of this painting-fundraiser is to represent the the protected parcels of land which the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust has preserved. At 4:30 to 5:30 there is a preview of the paintings with appetizers & wine and the Auction begins at 5:30 with well-known Auctioneer, Jim Fitzgerald.

Kittery Art Association is having their Annual Fall Show called "The Dark Side" in keeping with the tradition of Halloween and basic spookyness. The show Opening is on Sunday, October 17 4-6 pm and runs until November 7. I'll have 3 pieces in the show. Check it Out!

Newburyport Art Association is having Part 2 of their Fall Juried Show until October 31. The Juror is Ron Crusan, Director of Ogunquit Museum of American Art in Ogunquit, Maine. I have one painting juried into the show. So come by!

On a wilder note, the other day, a family of wild turkeys dropped by to chow on the remaining bird seed in our yard. There were about 6 young turkeys & 2 adults. The adults appeared to be about 18 pounds... the youngsters were about 9 pounds and they were full-of-beans, running to & fro, with not a care in the world. Oh, by the way... this is what turkeys-in-the-wild look like... you know, long necks, legs, feathers and everything...

The Beautiful Summer

On this last day of August, 2010, I am grateful for the beautiful summer that we have had in Southern Maine. It's been a really busy one, for me. Too busy, really, but it has made me appreciate the few moments of leisure that I did have. Between eight art shows beginning in May including three I organized and ran, and 4 college visits involving 10 campus tours & info sessions... not to mention 4 family reunions, I'm ready for some serious down time.

Coming up next week is my exhibit with Newburyport artist, Jan Roy. We have worked diligently on the details of our show, from the show card, actually a show "Email" in order to keep our costs down (...and save a tree), to all of the promotional work. It's hard to believe how much is involved. I'm looking forward to the Opening Reception on Friday, Sept 10, 7-9 pm in the Hills Gallery at Newburyport Art Association. Jan & I will be at the gallery throughout the week, as well.

August in Maine

I know! August already? What a great summer, weatherwise. It kills me to be in the studio on a beautiful day, but 23 years ago, I worked in an office on beautiful days. At least now, I can paint when I want, or walk on the beach if I want. And the economy? It's killing me. But, it'll come around.

We had company this week... relatives from Florida were visiting. The first night, we had a barbeque dinner at a place called Shaws Ridge, in Acton, ME, which was perfect for 2 little girls (2 & 4 years old), not to mention the exhausted parent & grandparent who had just flown-in from FL. I mean, it was perfect. There was a playground with swings & a jungle gym, a wooden playhouse and goofy-golf. Everyone was happy.

The next day we went to the beach. It wasn't Ogunquit. It wasn't Wells. It was Moody Beach. It was a little crowded because of high tide, but it was perfect for the little one's. There were no huge waves, just manageable ones. It was awesome. Couldn't ask for a better time and I'm sure our relatives from Florida would agree.

The next day we visited Amherst College (...our daughter is a rising high school senior in Southern Maine), did the tour & info session, and made it back to dinner at "Lobster in the Rough" at the Lobster Barn in York, Maine. There was a great band playing outdoors, folks were dancing-up-a-storm & everyone was happy. It was great!

August 20 - 22 is Art Guild of the Kennebunks final summer show at the Community House in Kennebunkport, Maine. This is also the only Awards Show of the year. I was so pleased to receive an award for Best Oil Painting (shown at left). The Juror was Mary Harding, Curator of the George Marshall Store Gallery in York, Maine, affiliated with the Old York Historical Society. The Community House is across the street from the Kennebunkport Post Office. The Art Guild is a juried group of professional artists from Southern Maine. The Opening Reception is on Friday August 20, from 5 to 7 pm. So, come on by!

I'm getting my paintings ready for a 2 Person Show in September, at Newburyport Art Association. Newburyport artist, Jan Roy & I are having an exhibit of our paintings from Sept 9 to Sept 15. I've known Jan's work for quite a long time, as she used to make calendars of her paintings and sell them in shops, pretty much, everywhere. Now, Jan is a full-time painter. I met Jan at a show drop-off back in January and it wasn't long before I contacted her about doing a show together. So, it should be a great show!

It's been a great summer so far. Beautiful weather, kind people and the galleries have been good this year! Newburyport Art Association sold my 2 paintings in the Annual Art Auction in June & I donated a watercolor to Kennebunk Animal Shelter's Art Auction which sold for $350.

Barn Gallery in Ogunquit has accepted my painting, "Kennebunk River Winter" in their Annual Juried Summer Show. Juror, John M. Day is Gallery Director at Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg Maine. About 350 paintings were juried and about 50 were selected for the show. The Opening reception is Saturday, July 10 from 5-8pm. Please stop in for this festive occasion! Speaking of Ogunquit, Art Guild of the Kennebunks is featuring one of my paintings in the promotional material for the July show at Community House in Kennebunkport Maine the weekend of July 23, 24, 25. I'm thrilled about it. The painting had been shown in the 3-day June Show but did not sell, but it may sell in July. The watercolor painting features the drawbridge at Perkins Cove in Ogunquit Maine, one of the first scenes I painted when I moved to Maine in 1987, but haven't painted it since. The scene at Perkins Cove is such a quaint, yet striking image, it is almost unreal. When I viewed it 3 weeks ago, it struck me. It was a high tide. The blue ocean in the canal was vibrant. The sky was clear. All the components were at play. So, that was it... I had to paint it.

Deep in the Sea

Then, there's the heartbreaking disaster deep in the sea, that no one knows quite what to do about. The proverbial elephant in the room. I don't know what there were thinking, drilling into the earth, under the ocean, without a disaster plan. I guess they all thought everything would be fine. I am truly sorry for the lives lost. Believe me, I don't have an answer either. I just hope that somehow the hole spewing out thousands of gallons of crude oil every minute can be plugged before the environment is completely and irreversably destroyed. The lives of the beautiful sea birds and ocean creatures is our responsibility as caretakers of this earth. Does everyone know that? How will this all play out?

Regarding last month's post concerning art auctions, I did submit a painting for the Kennebunk Animal Shelter and it did sell for $350. All proceeds went towards maintaining the shelter. Although, I griped about getting nothing for the effort in a previous comment on art auctions, in this case, doing the right thing is morally rewarding.

Effort Abounds

There's a squirrel that just doesn't get it, you know, that the bird food in the feeder is for the birds... not him. Last year, I had given-up. It wasn't the squirrels, it was the chipmunks. One morning, I had filled the feeder, then went in to shower and start a painting and within 2 hours the chipmunk had stuffed the entire amount into his or her cheeks. It was gone... all of it. It's not a chipmunk, it's a pigmunk. It's a shame. I love watching the birds at the feeder. It's okay... it's probably just enough time for the birds to get their families started, in the nest. And there's the squirrel again...

Speaking of not getting anything for the effort... I received 2 Invitations to participate in new Art Auctions recently. What that means is, I create paintings and frame them, which costs me money and then give them to an organization to sell, but I get nothing. Hmmm... Let me just think about this. What are they, crazy? I mean, I know all about not having. I live quite frugally, especially in the past 3 years. This economic recession has pretty much completely altered my family's way of being as well as the way I work as an artist. I no longer drive distances to paint, or buy supplies or attend exhibits. I sand down & gesso over old canvases instead of buying new ones. Watercolor is a more expensive medium because of matting & framing, so I haven't done many watercolors lately. Same for pastel. So, it's not an easy choice, giving up an invitation to participate because before I began receiving invitations, I wasn't recognized at all. I say, 'Give the artist something instead of nothing.' Other organizations do... Why not you?

The Kittery Art Association Show is coming up. I just finished putting the showcard together and I'll be picking-up 500 copies later today for distribution. "Jewels in the Stream" is the title of the show and the Opening Reception is Sunday, June 27, 4-6 PM. The show features the paintings of Wolfgang Ertl, Peter Moak, Polly Moak, Judith B J Totman & me, plus the poetry of Elizabeth Kirschner. Choosing from over 500 entries the juror stated: "In chosing the works to be included, I chose those which appeared to be made to the best ability of the artist, or revealed something distinct from the rest. Being an artist to day is difficult enough before asking to be judged and every artist who submitted to this call for work deserve our appreciation for taking the time and for allowing their work to be critically reviewed. My congratulations and thanks go to those who submitted and those whose work was ultimately chosen." I appreciated Mr. Stover's inclusive and thoughtful remarks. The extent of the artwork in the show includes every visable space within the NAA Gallery on both floors. The exhibit runs until May 23 and I have 2 oil paintings in the exhibit. Check it out!

Free to Be

Fortunately, two of my paintings were juried into the upcoming Regional Juried Show (RJS) at Newburyport Art Association (NAA). Oh yes, I have felt the pain of rejection from the "Juror", or even worse, "The Jury"... meaning, not just one person declined me, but three or four. It's brutal. I mean, I thought I was "home-free" after receiving my BFA from RISD in '82, but apparently not. You know, not to be a Johnny Raincloud but, a lot of the time the juror(s) are not art school graduates. I must say, having the gallery in 1991 & 1992 was a major boost to the old psyche, though. I ran the show... I did what I wanted and had no one to answer to. I also had to be there all the time, which was often difficult. So, I do the shows now, instead of running them... and I'm not tied down. I'm free to roam. I'm free to be.

Newburyport Art Association's Regional Juried Show runs April 30 to May 23, with an Opening Reception Saturday, May 1, 7-9pm. This is NAA's Annual Summer Event which actually begins months earlier involving CD/jpeg images & specific instructions. All artwork must be completed within the last 3 years and a total of $1,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. Should be a fun show and there's always a lot to in Newburyport, as well. I have 2 paintings in the show, both are featured to the right: "Winter River" and "Parsons Beach II". If you have the opportunity to see the show, it will be well worth your time.

In June, I'll be one of 6 artists in a Small Group Show titled, Jewels in the Stream at Kittery Art Association. We're putting the show together at this time and I look forward to working with this awesome group of artists. Plus, it's a great opportunity to exhibit more than 2 pieces! Cycles of Nature

Some interesting Spring thaws happening out there. Even the neighbors chickens are stepping out and finding new adventures in our yard. It gives our indoor cat, Annie, "raison d'etre" (French for reason-to-be). It's still pretty cold, but things appear to be coming alive again. The never-ending cycle of nature. Just fine with me.

Newburyport Art Association is having their "Spring Open Show" April 2 - April 25 with an Opening Reception Saturday, April 10, 7-9pm.

NAA is having their Annual Art Auction appropriately titled: "Artful Feast" on Saturday, June 12. Beautiful & Exquisite

This past Sunday I had the pleasure of attending The Whipple Arts Center musical production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "The King & I" at Berwick Academy in Southern Maine. The show was performed primarily by students in the Upper School with the exception of the younger members of the cast in the roles of the King's children. The show was remarkably professional and artistic. The King was played by senior, Freddy Diengott, who captured the essence of a King who has little regard for the humanity of those in his world. Anna, the teacher sent to educate the King's many children, was played by senior, Jo Fletcher, who eloquently delivers doses of decency into the King's view. The tragic victim, the King's conqubine, Tuptim, played by junior, Elizabeth Hopkins, brings the final message of inhumanity & cruelty into the forefront, beautifully & exquisitely performed. Another aspect of the excellence of the show were the beautiful costumes & talented orchestra of six players, remarkably. The show truly was a pleasure beyond compare.

Currently, I have 2 paintings in the Juried Show at Newburyport Art Association and I'm waiting to hear if my 3 other paintings were accepted into the Regional Juried Show which opens April 30 - May 23. I also have small paintings in the Giftshop.

Coming up in April is the Splendid Splashes Abstract Show at Rivertree Arts in Kennebunk Maine.

I will also be in The Shore Road Gallery in Ogunquit, Maine, a new one for me, and I look forward to it.

Heartwood College of Art has their Idolotry Show running until March 7. The next show is "Birds, Birds, Birds" or "100 Birds for Haiti" which runs from March 24 - April 29. 35% of the sale will be sent to Conbit Sante. This is also the annual Size Doesn't Matter Show.

Over Time & Circumstance

All artists create differently. Some prefer creating in a group setting with a model or still-life as the focus. Others prefer braving the elements. Come-hell-or-high water, they will be out there when the snow falls in winter and when the rain falls in October, in the fog. They will perch themselves on boulders at low-tide just to get the right view... just to get the right light. And they will trespass too. It's crazy. Well, that's what I've done, I have to confess. It's all about creating an environment... a mood. Over time & circumstance, I've had to reconsider my approach to finding the perfect view. C'est la vie.
As much as I have enjoyed group studio sessions and the feedback involved, I have come to appreciate the creative soul-searching that I have found working... well, alone. When I'm creating my work I need music... my music. That could be anything from Radiohead's Pablo Honey to Dave Matthews Band Under the Table and Dreaming to Andrew Bird's Noble Beast. The point is, it's what I want to hear, at that moment... and that has become very important to me. Every now and then I listen to the radio, but not for long. When I'm working, I'm focused. I can't be distracted by things. I've grown accustomed to a way of working... a way of being... a way of creating.
Winter presents an abundance of very cool views... pun intended. Over the next few weeks, I'll be working on paintings of winter & snow.

Happy New Year!

Newburyport Art Association's Juried Show runs from January 15 to February 7. They've set it up a little differently this year and as a result, I have the opportunity to be in 2 shows, that is, if my paintings are accepted by the Juror. The Winter Juried Show Part 1 will feature Watercolor, Pastel, Photography, Mixed Media, Drawing & Digital Art. I will present a watercolor and a pastel painting for jury. The Opening Reception for Part 1 is January 16, 3-5PM. Winter Show Part 2 will feature Acrylic, Oil, Sculpture, Fine Craft & Printmaking and I will present an acrylic and an oil painting for jury. The Opening Reception for Part 2 is February 14, 3-5PM. Wish me luck! Take the Newburyport MA Exit off of Route 95. Take a left at the light and follow until the 2nd church and take a left. Take a right on Water Street, follow for a mile and NAA will be on the left.

Kittery Art Association has their 1st All-Member Show of 2010: "Lighten Up!" from January 16 to February 7. "After a busy holiday season, we all look forward to lightening up." The Opening reception is January 17, 4-6PM. Winter Gallery Hours are Saturday 12 - 6PM, Sunday 12 - 5PM. Should be a great little show with a variety of interpretations what it is to lighten-up! The Gallery is on Coleman Avenue in Kittery Point, off of Route 103. Beautiful area to visit on a Saturday or Sunday in Winter!

Heartwood College of Art is having "An exhibition of images about Letting Go and Accepting the Outcome" from January 27 to March 4, with an Opening Reception January 27 at 4:30. The Subject Matter is "Idolotry" (spirited & spiritual icons, saintly or otherwise) After wrapping my head around the subject a few times, ideas begin to formulate. Should be a fun show... HCA is on Route 1 in Kennebunk.

Tis the Season

Here in southern Maine, it's been a mild season so far, but things may change shortly. I remember building "snow-forts" with my brothers as a kid in southern Pennsylvania, where I grew-up. There was so much snow one winter we were able to completely enclose the fort, with a ceiling and all. My older sister would have nothing to do with building snow-forts but she would go sledding every once in a while. There were some awesome hills in town, too. Hice hill was close to home and there was a huge hill on Conshohoken State Road where everyone used to go.
I went sledding on the golf course in York, Maine with my husband & daughter a few years ago. First time in years for me and it was incredibly exhilerating. I mean, it was totally awesome.

Thursday December 3 is the finale of the "1,2,3 Auction" at Heartwood College of Art on Route 1 in Kennebunk Maine. Unsold auction paintings will remain hanging and available for purchase until December 20 at the cost of $123.00.

Friday December 4 is the Portland ME ArtWalk beginning at 5 to 8pm. I have small paintings at Cygnet Gallery on Congress Street, so stop in if you're in Portland!

Also on Friday, Newburyport Art Association has their Holiday Show reception at 65 Water Street in Newburyport MA, 7-9pm. Always a good time! I have several small paintings in the giftshop and two oil paintings in the exhibit.

Shining Lights

Friday November 6 marked my debut Gallery Opening in Portland, Maine at Cygnet Gallery. Gallery owners, Kim Swan & Dennis Rafferty, do a fine job searching for artists and then shining a light on them. Just as cygnets become graceful and beautiful swans, so it is with artists, breaking-out to become who they are meant to be. I have four paintings in the exhibit - all oils - and all done with a combination of brush and palette knife. I find painting with a palette knife a more direct response to what I am trying to convey artistically and emotionally.

Musical Brilliance

We witnessed the creation of a masterpiece last night at South Portland Auditorium in Southern Maine when Andrew Bird performed magic with music. Andrew creates his music through a combination of instruments and sound effects beginning with a single sound or rhythm, then layering new sounds upon the foundation, like an orchestra building up to a crescendo. Even the lighting played a significant role in the performance. "With a combination of vocals, violin, guitar, glockenspiel & whistling, he uses centuries-old instrumentation to give depth and soul to folk rock." (ESQUIRE Nov 2008)

Instrumentalist, singer-songwriter Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, opened the show bringing her experimental, Indie flavour to compliment Andrew Bird's vast musical awesomeness.

October Colors

There is an Opening Reception this Friday evening at Cygnet Gallery in Portland, Maine featuring the work of five outstanding painters from Southern Maine. The show opens Oct 2 through the month of October. Cygnet Gallery will feature some of my work in November and I look forward to this new location and new connections in Portland.

Newburyport Art Association has their Fall Open Show currently with the Opening reception Saturday October 3, 7-9pm. I have 2 paintings in the show, both of which are shown on this blog. The show ends October 25.

Cuckle-Button Farm Gallery in Ogunquit will have an artists reception October 11, 2-5pm. I have 8 paintings in that show, including a range of different medium: pastel, acrylic & oil. Additionally, Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk, Maine has their outdoor Fall painting event the same weekend. It's busy time for artists and galleries!

The beaches are quiet now and the air is brisk. The colors of October surround and soothe. Perfect for the harvest fairs... Perfect for October.

Autumn!

I love this time of year. Just when I'm fully bummed about losing summer, something comes over me when I realize how much I love Autumn. The the feel & scent of air changes and becomes earthy. All of the tourists disappear in the area, for the most part... during the week anyway. The beaches are no longer clogged with thousands of sunworshippers... and I no longer have to take the back roads to get around. There are dozens of Harvest Fairs to choose from in New England. We'll probably stick close to home though, on account of the recession. Down East Magazine and Yankee Magazine always do a fine job covering the Harvest Fair circuit, as well as all of the local newspapers. So, it's not so bad, losing summer, 'cause we're gaining the beauty of Fall, in all of its glory. I say, "bring it on!"

Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk has several shows lined-up, including "The Golf Auction" on September 11. This is an invitational dinner for the senior members of Webhannet Golf Club in Kennebunk. Thursday September 17 is "The Crow Show" where anything "crow" goes. Sunday October 11 is "Trust in Art" which is the painting of the Kennebunk Trust Land in and around Kennebunkport. So, without further ado, I've got some painting to do!

Summer Daze in Maine

Well, the sun has finally decided to make an appearance after an insane amount of rain in June. It was getting a little ridiculous but it seems we're back on track now. Not much you can do about the weather, as they say. Even the old Maine saying: "If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute," wasn't holding it's own. For those who may be unfamiliar with this term, it simply means, the coast of Maine weather system constantly changes. The amount of rain we have received broke several records, according to the Southern Maine meteorologist reports extending back to 1953. Ironically, Seattle WA, known for its record amounts of rain is experiencing a record amount of sunshine this summer. I guess it all balances out in the end.

Breathtaking Performances

This past week, I had the privilege of experiencing the music of the Ambrosia Trio in Ogunquit, Maine. Ogunquit Performing Arts presented the 15th Annual Chamber Music Festival at the Dunaway Center and at Barn Gallery. On Thursday, June 11, my daughter, Elizabeth, was asked to be the "page-turner" for the pianist, Frank Daykin. Elizabeth has taken piano for ten years at Rivertree Center for the arts in Kennebunk, Maine, and currently she is instructed by Sherwin Day. In the past 2 years, she has been performing in the Upperschool Coffeehouse at her school, as well as a few public coffeehouses. Being the page-turner for an accomplished pianist who regularly performs in NYC Concert Halls is not an easy task for anyone, as it involves reading the music as it is being performed, not to mention being onstage. We also attended Saturday's performance of the DaPonte String Quartet at Barn Gallery, an equally outstanding and skillful group of musicians. Originally from Philadelphia, DaPonte String Quartet migrated to Maine in 1995 and made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2005 with rave reviews from the New York Times. DaPonte successfully combines classical Mozart with contemporary music of Ades and finishing with the romanticism of Debussy. Breathtaking. Needlesstosay, the performances were awesome.

Time & Again

The Cuckle-Button Farm Gallery on Route 1 in Ogunquit, Maine, in the Leavitt Theatre building is now featuring my paintings. Not too long ago, I owned the Hoyt's Lane Gallery directly across the street from the Leavitt Theatre which has since become part of The Yellow Monkey B&B. Diagonally across the street is Bread & Roses Bakery where I got my coffee and muffin every morning 16 years ago (...and still today). So, it's kind of like coming home again. Nice. I'm all for branching out and spreading the work of M.P. Hopkins far and wide, but with the current economy mending as it is, along with the fluctuating fuel costs, keeping the driving to a minimum is the way it is for me.

The Barn Gallery on Shore Road in Ogunquit always has an interesting array of monthly exhibits and Ogunquit Museum of American Art features outstanding art of the day and of historic significance. It is known that Ogunquit Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the country and Ogunquit has some great restaurants and funky shops, as well. Gypsy Sweethearts Restaurant on Shore Road is one of my favorites and they also exhibit my paintings. Don't forget to check-out the lounge on the 2nd floor.

Spring '09

Heartwood College of Art in Kennebunk, Maine has a sweet, little, Juried Exhibit currently, titled "Size Doesn't Matter." The image size is no more than 25 square inches, in any shape the artist pleases. I have three paintings in the show, which ends April 23.

At Newburyport Art Association in Newburyport MA currently - Budding Artist Exhibit - for artists under 18 years old.
Coming-up on April 25 at NAA is another exhibit - The Artist's Voice. This is not a juried show which gives everyone an opportunity to create and be in a show.
NAA's Regional Juried Show acceptance notification is also coming-up and yes, I too, await acceptance.

As long as you are in Newburyport, stop in Valerie's Gallery on State Street. Valerie's has many fun objects, jewelry, glass-art and artistic things! My paintings are also on exhibit.

It's nice to have the temperature above 50 again! Long walks on the beach are definitely something I look forward to this time of year.

Recent Paintings

In Fall of 2008, I began working on a series of small pastels after visiting The George Marshall Store Gallery in York, Maine. The gallery featured pastels by Connie Hayes, a Maine artist I have followed for many years. The pastels I created are now distributed in several galleries, including Valerie's Gallery, The Shop at Newburyport Art Association (Newburyport MA) and The Gallery at Heartwood College of Art (Kennebunk ME).

Recently, I've been focusing on large oil paintings... 20"x20" size. They're kind of... "atmospheric landscapes". Perhaps more focus than usual is placed on sky and adventure with color; painted with brush as well as palette knife. I like to switch mediums and applications pretty regularly. The way I see it, there are many ways to create art and I want to use different mediums to their full potential. That's what works for me. At least, at this stage of my life.

I'm looking forward to Barn Gallery's (Ogunquit ME) Opening coming-up and "The Jury Decision" at both Newburyport Art Association and Barn Gallery. It was easier when I had my own gallery 16 years ago and I ran the show, but the down side was that I had to be at the gallery all the time. So, I've opted to do it differently by being involved with galleries with all the different personalities and decisions to "include" or "decline".
